While pension funds have strengthened with the financial market rebound, OECD data show that pension fund assets in most countries have yet to recover to pre-crisis levels. Public pension funds, however, have now fully made up for their crisis-related losses due to more conservative investment strategies, according to the July 2010 edition of Pension Markets in Focus.

Since its founding in 2001, the Journal of Pension Economics and Finance (JPEF) has served as the only peer-reviewed journal focusing on pension economics and finance issues. Through its association with the OECD and the International Organisation of Pension Supervisors (IOPS), JPEF has become an influential outlet for research on pension issues and is widely circulated to the top academic departments as well as leading regulators, policymakers and international organisations.

Pension funds staged a partial recovery in the first half of 2009, generating investment returns of 3.5% in nominal terms. But, as of 30 June 2009, total pension funds assets still remained 14% below their December 2007 levels, according to the latest edition of OECD Pensions Markets in Focus.

The OECD and the World Bank today announced the preliminary results of their project evaluating the financial performance of pension funds around the world.
The project aims to examine how to measure financial performance of pension funds taking into account the link between participants’ benefits to the performance of financial markets.

The CEEC Forum Conference was organised on 24 March 2009. The event was hosted by the Hungarian Financial Supervisory Authority and the conference program included speakers from that Institution as well as from the International Organisation of Pension Supervisors.
Topics discussed included: pay-out phase of mandatory DC pension accounts; testimonials: financial crisis and mandatory private pension systems; investment restrictions and supervision for mandatory pension management companies /providers.

The workshop focused on issues relative to pension supervision and regulation which are subject of intense policy debate in the majority of the countries around the world and in particular in the MENA region. Discussion concentrated on development of risk based approach to pension supervision, regulatory and industry initiatives aimed to enhance pension fund governance, innovative strategies being adopted by the supervisory authorities to respond to the shift from define benefit to define contribution pension arrangements and to financial education.

The OECD/IOPS Global Forum on Private Pensions took place on 30-31 October 2008 in Mombasa, Kenya. The Global Forum was organised back to back with the IOPS Technical and Executive Committee meetings on 29 October 2008 and the IOPS Annual General Meeting on 30 October 2008.

The Research Centre on Financial Economics (CIEF) of the School of Economics and Management of the Technical University of Lisbon, Portugal is organising the 7th Meeting on Social Security and Complementary Pensions Systems – Pensions Funds Ethics and Governance to be held on June 6, 2008. This meeting aims to offer a forum for researchers (Ph.D. students, Post docs and others) to present and discuss with a competent audience their theoretical or empirical papers.

The OECD/IOPS Global Forum on Private Pensions was held on 14 November (afternoon session) and 15 November 2007. This event was co-organised and co-sponsored by the China Insurance Regulatory Commission (CIRC). The OECD/IOPS Global Forum, being a part of the OECD programme of co-operation with non-member economies, was organised under the aegis of the OECD Working Party on Private Pensions, with sponsorship by the Government of Japan, and under the aegis of the IOPS.
