In the wake of the financial crisis, a process has been under way at both the national and the international levels to rethink the shape of the supervisory architecture for the financial sector. In various countries of the European Union, in particular, there has been a rapidly growing convergence on the need for a rapprochement between the micro- and the macro-prudential components of the supervision of financial institutions. Parallel to these European developments, in Belgium too the main lines have been drawn for a new organization of supervision.

Private pensions are acquiring an increasing importance in Jordan. The Royal vision is to extend the social protection network to include all citizens in the Kingdom. Moreover, the amendments made to the social security law, introducing ceilings to pension salaries, make private pension insurance products of particular appeal to citizens interested in increasing their pension incomes.

The IOPS Workshop on Pension Supervision was held in Warsaw, Poland on 26-27 July 2010. This workshop presented the work of the IOPS in the field of risk-based supervision and provided an opportunity to learn about IOPS members’ risk-based approaches in more detail. The workshop was targeted at government officials involved in pension supervision and private pension reforms from the Central and Eastern Europe region as well as a selected number of IOPS member countries.

The Congress will dedicate a session to DC pension provision, the fastest growing segment of the private pension market in Europe. It will present important EFRP research on DC pension provision in Europe.

IOPS Caribbean Regional Workshop on private pension supervision, 8-9 October, Jamaica

The workshop aimed to address a wide range of topics which are of interest to supervisory agencies in the Caribbean region as well as other countries globally. The application and use of the internationally agreed IOPS Principles of Private Pension Supervision was also be considered, and ways to reinforce supervisory coordination in the Caribbean region (including consideration of the development of a Caribbean Association of Pension Supervisors) were discussed.
