As the proportion of retirement income provided by private pensions becomes increasingly important, the quality and effectiveness of their supervision becomes more and more crucial. The series therefore reviews the nature and effectiveness of new and established pensions supervisory systems, providing examples, experiences and lessons learnt for the benefit of IOPS members and the broader pensions community. Published today, these four working papers highlight a range of challenges to be met in the development of national pension supervisory systems.

Following the process of public consultation, the Guidelines on the Licensing of Pension Entities were approved by the IOPS members at the Annual general meeting, held in beijing in November 2007, and by the OECD Working Party on Private Pensions. The Guidelines have been transmitted to the OECD Council for approval.

The Research Centre on Financial Economics (CIEF) of the School of Economics and Management of the Technical University of Lisbon, Portugal is organising the 7th Meeting on Social Security and Complementary Pensions Systems – Pensions Funds Ethics and Governance to be held on June 6, 2008. This meeting aims to offer a forum for researchers (Ph.D. students, Post docs and others) to present and discuss with a competent audience their theoretical or empirical papers.

The OECD/IOPS Global Forum on Private Pensions was held on 14 November (afternoon session) and 15 November 2007. This event was co-organised and co-sponsored by the China Insurance Regulatory Commission (CIRC). The OECD/IOPS Global Forum, being a part of the OECD programme of co-operation with non-member economies, was organised under the aegis of the OECD Working Party on Private Pensions, with sponsorship by the Government of Japan, and under the aegis of the IOPS.

A conference on 'Pension Supervision - current trends and issues: International experience' was held in Warsaw on 17-19 September 2006. The conference was hosted by the Insurance and Pensions Supervisory Commission of Poland and discussed the issues of the role, structure, organization and methods of conducting the effective pensions supervision.

The OECD / IOPS Conference on Private Pensions was held in Istanbul on 7-8 November 2006. It was a unique event, discussing topics crucial not only for the host country Turkey but also for countries with developing pension markets in both Europe and the Middle East – and indeed for OECD member states and countries around the globe.
