OECD/IOPS Conference on Private Pensions in Latin America

The OECD / IOPS Conference on Private Pensions in Latin America was a unique event, discussing topics crucial not only for the host country Chile and the Latin America region, but for OECD member states and countries globally.

Chile kindly offered to host the conference as, having introduced ground breaking and highly influential pension reform 20 years ago, their pension system is now being reassessed. Indeed the new Chilean President immediately announced pension reform as a key part of her government’s agenda. High level Chilean Ministerial representatives took part in the event.

The co-organisation of the conference between the OECD and IOPS ensures representation from a range of countries, from those with the most sophisticated private pension systems, to those in the initial stages of development. However, all countries are facing the same type of challenges – including raising coverage levels, dealing with increased individual choice, structuring the payout-phase of pensions and moving toward risk-based supervision. Such topics were discussed in depth at the meeting, within the context of the OECD’s Principles and Guidelines which provide a unique framework for countries introducing pension reform.

The conference was held in Santiago, Chile on 29-30 March 2006. Presentations from the conference and the summary report can be found via the following link:
